Space Maker CNC is a project to create and document the creation of a CNC usable for creating space grade components.

The goals for the project are:

  • Minimum 0.1mm finished product accuracy
  • Capable of milling aerospace grade aluminium (Al 7075)
  • A work space of 500*500*300
  • Total cost of BOM under 2,000 USD

Progress

  • Base structure (complete)
  • Base linear rails (complete)

Next steps

  • X-axis ballscrew
  • X-axis motor
  • Gantry structure

BOM (so far)

Base

  • 1400mm SBR20 linear rail
  • 2 SBR20 linear rail bearings
  • 2.4m 3090 aluminium extrusion
  • 4 3060 aluminium extrusion angle brackets
  • 0.4m 3030 aluminium extrusion
  • 8 3030 aluminium extrusion angle brackets
  • 4 adjustable feet
  • 40 3030 aluminium extrusion nuts and bolts
  • DM542 Microstep driver
  • 23HS2430 Stepper motor (this motor should be swapped out for a less powerful one)

Gantry

  • 2.86m 3090 aluminium extrusion
  • 4 3030 aluminium extrusion angle brackets.
